Christmas in July works in the Yarra Valley for a simple reason: July here actually looks like Christmas is supposed to. Cold, misty, bare trees and a fire going.
The Australian December is hot, bright and spent outdoors, which is lovely and has nothing to do with the imagery on the cards. Christmas in July puts the meal back in the weather it was designed for. In Dixons Creek that means fog on the vines in the morning and single digits by evening.
Who it suits
- Extended families who cannot all get together in December because of in-laws, travel or work.
- Groups of friends who want an excuse for a long meal and a weekend away.
- Work teams for whom December is the busiest month of the year. Hospitality, retail and logistics teams often celebrate in winter instead.
Plan it as a weekend, not a dinner
The mistake is treating it as one meal. If people are driving an hour each way, the meal should sit inside a night away. Friday afternoon to Sunday morning, or Saturday to Sunday, both work.
A shape that works
- Saturday afternoon: arrive, drop bags, one cellar door. Fergusson Winery is about a five minute walk from us.
- Late afternoon: the fire pit while it gets dark, which in July is early.
- Evening: the long meal. Book it well in advance. Winter is quiet in the valley generally, but Christmas in July bookings concentrate on a handful of weekends.
- Sunday morning: a slow breakfast and the drive home through Yarra Glen, or the Black Spur if anyone is still enthusiastic.
Booking the rooms
For a group, accommodation is quoted rather than booked room by room. Send us the dates and how many rooms you need. De'Vine Escape has 22 rooms in total: 3 Queen, 3 King Spa and 16 Twin. Twin rooms have two queen beds, which suits friends and older children sharing.
Group rates depend on dates, room numbers and length of stay. Any discount we apply will not exceed 15% and cannot be combined with other offers.
Practical notes
- Book the meal before the rooms. Restaurant availability is the constraint, not accommodation.
- Nominate a driver or stay within walking distance. Rideshare coverage in Dixons Creek is unreliable.
- Confirm dietary requirements once, in writing. Winter set menus have less flexibility than an a la carte booking.
- Bring a coat. It is genuinely cold out here after dark.
Making it a work event
If this is a team celebration rather than a family one, the same weekend can carry a short planning session in the morning. Meeting space is arranged through our partner venues, subject to confirmation with them. See Corporate & Group Retreats for how that works.
