Good team-building in the Yarra Valley tends to be a shared experience rather than a structured exercise. These are the options that work locally, ordered from the gentlest to the most demanding.
Low effort, high return
A long lunch at a winery
Underrated, and the only activity on this list that everyone will agree to. Three hours around one table does more for a team than most facilitated sessions. Fergusson Winery is about a five minute walk from De'Vine Escape and DiVino Ristorante is a short drive.
A guided wine tour
The advantage over doing it yourself is that nobody has to drive and nobody has to plan. Yarra Valley X arrange local tours and can collect groups from the property.
The fire pit
Free, on site, and reliably the part of a retreat people mention afterwards. Ten acres, very little light pollution, and no agenda.
Moderate effort
A sunrise hot air balloon flight
The one that gets remembered. Global Ballooning Australia fly over the valley and offer private group flights, which is worth it if you want the team in one basket rather than split between strangers.
The catch is the hour. Flights leave around dawn because the air is only calm then, so it works best on the second morning of a retreat rather than after a late dinner.
E-bike tours
Electric bikes flatten the fitness gap in a group, which is exactly what you want. Everyone arrives at the same place at roughly the same time and nobody is embarrassed. Available through Yarra Valley X.
A day at the races
Yarra Valley Racing at Yarra Glen runs relaxed country meetings through the year. It suits larger groups and end-of-year celebrations better than small teams.
Higher effort, for teams that want it
Walking the Black Spur and the Redwood Forest
The Black Spur climbs through mountain ash north of Healesville, and the Redwood Forest near Warburton is a flat, easy walk under Californian redwoods planted in the 1930s. Both need a driver and a couple of hours. Both are better than anything you can organise in a function room.
Healesville Sanctuary as a group
About 15 km away, and a genuinely good option for teams with families joining, or for an end-of-year event that is not centred on drinking. Healesville Sanctuary also runs functions.
What to avoid
Two things, from watching a lot of groups come through.
- More than one activity a day. The second one is always the one people opt out of.
- Anything that requires public performance. The quietest person on your team is not having a good time, and everyone else can tell.
Putting it together
Pick one activity per day, book it at the same time as the accommodation, and leave the afternoon between the session and dinner completely empty. That gap is where teams actually talk.
We can arrange the accommodation and introduce you to the operators. Start with the form on our Corporate Retreats page.
Stay in the middle of the valley
De'Vine Escape has 22 rooms on ten acres in Dixons Creek, about a five minute walk from Fergusson Winery and an hour from Melbourne.
