Most people invited to a Yarra Valley wedding have the same three questions: how long is the drive, where do I sleep, and is it worth making a weekend of it. Short answers: about an hour, book early, and yes.
The drive
Dixons Creek is around 50 km from Melbourne City. Allow roughly an hour, or up to 90 minutes on a Friday afternoon or during holiday traffic. From Melbourne Airport it is closer to 70 minutes.
The two usual routes are through Lilydale and Yarra Glen, or through Kangaroo Ground. Both put you on the Melba Highway for the last stretch. Mobile reception is patchy in places, so load your directions before you leave the freeway.
Book accommodation before you book anything else
This is the part guests leave too late. The valley is a wedding region, which means the weekends that suit weddings are the weekends everything is full. If the couple have arranged a room block, take it. If they have not, book as soon as you have the date.
Staying near the venue is worth more than staying somewhere slightly nicer further away, for one reason: you are going to drink at a winery. Walking distance beats a taxi in a rural area at midnight every time.

What to wear, practically
Yarra Valley weddings are usually part outdoors. That means:
- Grass and gravel are common underfoot. Block heels survive the day, stilettos do not.
- Evenings cool down quickly, even in summer. Bring a layer regardless of the forecast.
- Winter here is genuinely cold and often wet. A coat that works over formal wear is not optional.
Getting there and back on the day
Rideshare coverage in Dixons Creek is unreliable. Plan as though it does not exist. The options that actually work are: stay within walking distance, arrange a minibus with the other guests, or nominate a driver before the day rather than during it.
Make a weekend of it
You have driven an hour. Stay the Friday and the Saturday, and use the rest of the weekend.
- Sunday morning: a slow breakfast and a walk. Nobody is at their best the morning after a wedding.
- Sunday midday: one cellar door, not four. Fergusson, Immerse and De Bortoli are all within a few minutes of Dixons Creek.
- With children: Healesville Sanctuary or the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie.
- On the way home: the Black Spur, if you can face the winding road, or Yarra Glen for lunch if you cannot.
Gifts, cash and connectivity
Bring a card with the details written in advance. Writing it in the car park is a tradition but not a good one. And assume you will have no signal at the venue, so confirm the ceremony time and the dress code before you arrive.
